5 Mistakes to Avoid When Buying a Gate Operator.
The wrong choice costs more to fix than to get right the first time. Here is what to check before you order.
Buying for the gate you have, not the gate you want
If you are planning to replace a lightweight gate with a heavier steel one, spec the operator for the final gate weight — not the current one. Undersizing now means a full replacement later.
Ignoring the weight of the gate leaf
Every operator has a maximum load rating. Running above it strains the motor, raises the temperature, and shortens the service life. Weigh the full gate leaf — frame, infill, and hardware — before specifying. Open Bear sliding operators handle up to 1,800 kg. If the weight is close to the limit, move to the next model up.
Choosing the wrong motor type for the gate style
A sliding gate operator cannot drive a swing gate, and vice versa. Floor swing operators need a specific installation depth below the surface. Confirm the gate type and mounting position before ordering — the wrong motor type means a full reinstall at full cost.
Skipping the safety sensors
Obstacle detection is not an optional extra. A gate that closes on a child, a pet, or a vehicle is a liability. Every Open Bear operator supports photocell and safety edge integration — confirm the accessories are included in your order before installation begins.
Not confirming the power supply at the motor position
The motor runs on DC24V from the supplied controller. The controller requires a 220VAC mains supply at the installation point. Confirm the cable run distance and power availability before the installer arrives on site.
